IMET2000 Autumn Extravaganza on Monday September 27th, 2021 at 7pm on Zoom

SLTB informs its members about the upcoming IMET2000 event. Please help in the pioneering work in mental health and saving lives in so many countries worldwide suffering terribly from this COVID-19 pandemic particularly child refugees and victims of war.

Funds will be sought for:

West Bank Palestine: Advanced training in critical care of COVID-19 infected patients for nurses, doctors and allied professionals in Gaza and the West Bank

West Bank: Essential equipment to expand our Basic Life Support training in the IMET2000 Acute Trauma Unit in Ramallah 

Gaza: Child Mental Health Centre and Mental Health Training after our child mental health clinic was destroyed by an Israeli bomb on May 14th

Syria: Joint project with Firefly International with education and training for Syrian children in refugee camps (in Syria and Turkey)

Lebanon: Joint project working in the refugee camps in child mental health with one part time experienced psychologist, clinical training in the UK for 2 young psychologists in child treatment and our partner NGO working with us in art and music therapy

Yemen: Joint project with partner charity Action for Child Trauma International (ACTI) training Yemeni psychologists in modern specialist therapies for victims of war

Ghana: Joint project with partner charity Action Through Enterprise (ATE) for support of severely handicapped and disabled children and their mothers

Uganda: Management of COVID-19 patients, installing piped oxygen and large oxygen generator for the operating theatres and CV19 ward in our IMET2000

Canadian Stem Cell Network - Online workshop

Cryopreservation is a routine but complex process used during the development and delivery of cell therapies. Although sometimes overlooked, effective cryopreservation is a key consideration that contributes to the reproducibility and utility of cell products in regenerative medicine applications. Stem Cell Network, in conjunction with the Society for Low Temperature Biology (SLTB), is excited to host two new online cryopreservation educational workshops that will inform participants on the principles, best practices and latest advances in cryopreservation. In the first workshop, regenerative medicine researchers will be exposed to the fundamental principles of cellular cryopreservation, as well how cryopreservation impacts cell stability and viability, and the implications this can have for the storage and shipping of cells. In the second part, the workshop will look at the principles for cryopreserving systems containing multiple cell types or complex multicellular structures, such as organs or organoids, as well as discuss the progress that is being made in the development of new techniques and cryoprotectants.

The workshop, which is open to investigators and trainees, features talks from subject matter experts from the field of cryopreservation research and includes discussion and Q&A sessions.

Workshop dates:
Part 1: Wednesday, May 5 at 12pm - 3pm ET (9am- 12pm PT; 5pm-8pm BST)
• Session 1: Fundamental principles of cryopreservation
• Session 2: Viability and stability

Part 2: Wednesday, June 2 at 12pm - 3pm ET (9am- 12pm PT; 5pm-8pm BST)
• Session 1: Cryopreservation of complex systems
• Session 2: New techniques and reagents, including novel cryoprotectants

Confirmed Speakers include:
• Dr. Ram Devreddy, Louisiana State University
• Dr. Gloria Elliot, University of North Carolina
• Dr. Charles Hunt, independent
• Dr. Birgit Glasmacher, Hannover Med Tech Inst
• Dr. Denys Pogozhykh, Hannover Medical School
• Dr. Juan Hernandez Medrano, University of Nottingham
• Dr. Ina Meissner, Fraunhofer IBMT

Registration is required to participate in these educational workshop; please complete the registration form below. Links to access the workshop will be emailed to registrants at the end of April.

Coming Soon - Online Event

In collaboration with European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference, SLTB will host a new online event organized by Prof. Birgit Glasmacher and Dr. Oleksandr Gryshkov

Cryotechnology for Regenerative Medicine: Technical and Biomedical Challenges

Within the growing field of tissue engineering, it is of utmost interest to develop methods for storage of tissue-engineered (bioartificial) constructs. This is of high importance to ensure their on demand availability for clinical and research purposes. Cryopreservation of cells and tissue engineered constructs meets a number of challenges associated with the absence of efficient protocols for their efficient storage hampered by inhomogeneous heat and mass transfer, suboptimal configuration of cryopreservation cocktails, as well as mechanical stresses upon ice (re)crystallization during the freeze/thawing processes. This session aims at highlighting novel trends in the field of tissue engineering, biobanking and biomedical imaging focusing on cryopreservation-related technical and biomedical aspects. To facilitate cells and engineered tissues to survive low temperature storage it is important to consider a number of processes, which can only be understood combining the knowledge of engineering, physics, biology, mathematics, and chemistry. The session will provide novel insights into the emerging field of cryotechnology for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Moreover, the participants will benefit from novel information on how to perform efficient long-term storage of bioartificial tissues, from an opportunity to establish prospective cooperations and multidisciplinary networking.

Call for nominations for SLTB Committee

Members should have received the following email regarding the SLTB call for nominations for the Executive Committee. Please send any nominations you have by noon (UK time) on Friday 25th September including the details requested below.

2020 SLTB ELECTION

In preparation for the upcoming 2020 SLTB AGM, the SLTB Committee would like to invite nominations for vacant positions on the SLTB Committee. Once elected, specific roles to be allocated will be discussed with elected candidates. We aim to elect one UK based candidate for SLTB Treasurer to comply with accounting and Charity Commission restrictions and 2 positions open to both national and international members.

When providing your application, please email to SLTB with your contact information, a brief statement on why you are applying as a committee member of SLTB, a short biography for use with ballot forms and a suitable picture. Nominations must be for SLTB members in good standing.

Please submit nominations to SLTBCryo@gmail.com by noon on 25th September 2020. Successful candidates will be announced at the AGM and roles will take effect 15 days following.
